Having trouble getting your students to create a specific thesis? This graphic organizer will help each student structure a specific thesis that will help them to then appropriately structure their paper.
After the students decide how they feel about the topic. After that, the students create their thesis using the Thesis Generator. Knowing the information about the topic that they need to find out, have the students should use either index cards, or, as I do, Source Pages to collect their research. A Source Page is like a digital set of note cards. Students should put the MLA at the top of each page using http://www.citationmachine.net/ . Students should then copy and paste quotes from that particular resource on to the page with the source info. Other sources should be on separate pages with their info.
Next, students will use the Thesis Generator to put each Reason in the Paper Organizer in the Topic Sentence locations for each paragraph. Then, students will put the info they gathered about each topic in the Quotes locations. Explain to students that their citation for each quote is the first word of the source on their source page.
I also suggest use of the following SEPARATE items: Thesis Generator, Putting Quotes into Sentences Powerpoint, and Putting Quotes into Sentences page that will teach students how to organize a thesis and correctly weave quotes into sentences.
