I use this project with my AP English Language and Honors American Literature classes of 11th graders. Students identify a problem in society that they can work to solve. They research the problem and possible solutions, then work as a group to develop a community/ school based project that addresses the problem. This went awesomely in my class this year! I had kids pick all sorts of interesting problems to research: animal welfare, homelessness, sleep depravation, among many others. They researched the problem and then came up with a creative project to address it. I've included the assignment, peer editing activities, and rubrics for the paper and project. It is uploaded as an editable document so you can adapt it for your own students!
