Product Description
This high-interest research project focuses on a topic that is relevant to our world today – the impact of using electronics, having Internet access beginning at a young age, and the use of social media on today’s modern teen.

This research resource includes access to a Social Media and Teens research Symbaloo with 60 digital resources bookmarked for your students in order to conduct research – including video clips and documentaries.

Students will use the links in order to explore digital resources on various topics – including the link between social media and anxiety, how social media facilitates the need to present one’s “false self,” the impact of cyber-bullying, the danger presented by online predators, the destruction caused by Internet addiction, how social media negatively impacts self-esteem, and how the use of electronic devices alters brain structure and negatively impacts our thought process.

Students will be introduced to this project with a pre-search song activity featuring two songs that contain lyrics about social media. Using the included materials, students will analyze the songs’ lyrics, watch the music videos (optional), and answer questions regarding the depiction of social media presented by the songs’ artists. A teacher’s answer key is included.

A modern Social Media and Teens Google Slides presentation with graphics and images has been included and can be shared with students! This slides presentation outlines each step of this research project – including all the links your students will need for research, a choice board of suggested research topics, and two different final project options (along with the requirements for each)!

Students will be engaged by this structured research project from start from finish!

Exposed: Social Media’s Impact on Teens includes the following resources:

★ A pdf file containing Google Drive share links to all resources;
★ Directions on how to access and share materials for teachers using Google Drive, Google Classroom, Microsoft OneDrive, and Microsoft Office;
★ Two pre-search song activities analyzing the song lyrics, comprehension questions, and a teacher’s answer key;
★ An editable Google Slides presentation that outlines clear project guidelines;
★ Access to 60 bookmarked sites and video clips on social media’s impact on teens;
★ Two final research project options for differentiation and student choice with requirements for each;
★ Project grading rubrics for each final project option;
★ A note-taking handout with guiding research prompts and questions – along with a space provided for the MLA website citation.
★ A pacing guide with teacher’s notes.

The note-taking handout with research prompts will help ensure that students learn the note-taking process, facilitates their paraphrasing researched information vs. copying/pasting articles, and will provide structure for your students throughout the research process.

The Social Media Topics Choice Board and two different final project options allow students the ability to choose what interests them the most. Allowing student choice is a great way to motivate your students and to foster ownership within them for their own learning!

This modern, relevant research project will not only teach students effective research skills but also will provide them with the opportunity to pause and reflect on how the use social media can potentially impact their own psyche and lives.
