The purpose of these activities is to teach students how to find information from various sources and to practice reading informational texts with a purpose. They may know some of the answers already, but encourage students to find the answer and cite the source.
You may want to set parameters for students on how many of each type of resource they can use. For example, I only allow students to use a website for two questions on any one scavenger hunt. This way, students get out of the habit of just ‘Googling’ something. I also required that students use at least one book, one real bound encyclopedia, one online encyclopedia (which I consider different than a website) and one website.
One way you may choose to use this activity is by setting up a research center in your class. I actually did a modified version of the “Daily 5” and included “Research” instead of “Listen to Reading” during my reading instruction. Each week, I would check out different nonfiction books about our social studies, science, and holiday topics, and students would do scavenger hunts. My third graders loved them and begged to do more research!
