Help your students learn abut research projects while learning how winter holidays are practiced in ten different countries.
There are informational texts about winter holidays and traditions in ten different countries:
United States Christmas
Sweden St. Lucia Day
Japan Romantic Day
United KingdomChristmas and Boxing Day
Italy La Befana
Students can research all of the celebrations or a just a few, depending on the time you have available. Usually, I have them choose or I assign several countries to research and write about. We then share the information so all of the students hear about all of the celebrations.
Students practice close reading skills. I have provided an information sheet about ten winter holidays. I usually collect short books from the library about the various countries.
They begin their research for each country by taking notes. The note taking forms have specific questions for them to answer to help them formulate the notes.
They then choose the information they feel is important and to write it on a planning graphic organizer. Finally, they write a short paragraph and draw an illustration of the country’s celebration.
There are ten sets of Notes, Planning and Writing Frames for specific countries. There is also a blank set that can be copied and used for any additional country you choose to include.
The writing frames can be assembled into a short booklet. There is a cover page for the booklet. This makes a fun holiday take home book.
