This unit invites children to research a grade level science concept or topic. The research and writing skills in this unit may be applied to a social studies concept or topic. Students should have completed the unit on Essay writing. Students will use what they learned about thesis statements, organization of support, revision using the essay questions and paragraphing to develop a final, complete product. Third grade focuses on examining and explaining a topic. They will begin to use compare and contrast structures orally using accountable talk, and in revision learn to use signal words to compare ideas about the topic and linking words to connect ideas within categories. Fourth and fifth grade take this further as they begin to compare information from more than one source using linking words and transitional phrases to develop a more sophisticated piece.
