This unit engages students in reading/research, nonfiction writing, and science! "Disasters" can be defined as natural disasters (volcano, Hurricane Katrina) and those caused by human error (Titanic).
Materials are shared between two student packets. The resource packet guides the research process. It includes:
An optional cover for student materials
Brainstorming a list of disasters
A KWHL chart
Developing the topic, subheadings (chapters), and taking notes
The bibliography examples page, how to record bibliographic entries
Bibliography draft for citing sources
Glossary draft for identifying important vocabulary
Text features reference chart
Revision and editing guidelines
The final draft pages (second packet) include:
The cover page with title, author, and directions for illustration
A table of contents page
An introduction, 3 chapters, and a conclusion, ALL clearly defined
A glossary final draft
A bibliography final draft
Revision and editing directions (students tear this page off the back of the packet when finished)
This is a complete unit in a scaffolded format. Scaffolding information is the sequencing of content, materials, and tasks. ALL terms are defined within the guide! Move through the materials with students bit-by-bit as time allows. Begin with the resource packet. Then move on to the final draft packet. Super simple!
