This assignment involves having students identify, research, and design an interactive flyer that teaches their peers about a modern-day witch hunt that occurred or is occurring in the USA.
This product guides students through the definition of a witch hunt, provides guiding research questions and space for recording notes, helps them organize their research findings and plan a written analysis, directs them to tools for designing an infographic, and provides criteria for an accompanying one-page analysis.
The product includes a 50-point rubric.
When I teach this, I usually use the example of McCarthyism already in a discussion with The Crucible, so I do not permit students to use that incident. I use the discussion of McCarthyism to acquaint students with the inquiry questions they will eventually answer about their own topic.
I have students finish this project in a variety of ways, including presentation in front of class, a gallery walk, and show and tell, but this is not part of this product or assessed on the rubric...just ideas you might use!
