Description

In this elaborate activity, students read two scientific texts adapted for classroom use to obtain information about the effects of changes to resource availability on organism growth and populations. They answer analysis questions to determine the purpose, methods, and results of the investigations and connect the studies to the DCI, and then they complete a Cause and Effect graphic organizer to illustrate their understanding of the causal relationships between the factors in the studies.

This activity is part of the middle school unit Organisms and Their Environments. If you are interested in the complete unit, you can find additional activities at iExploreScience on TeachersPayTeachers or in the sample resource library of the Science Teacher Tribe Course + Community.

This activity is part of a complete unit that builds towards these standards:

MS-LS2-1 Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for the effects of resource availability on organisms and populations of organisms in an ecosystem.

MS-LS2-2 Construct an explanation that predicts patterns of interactions among organisms across multiple ecosystems.

MS-ESS2-4 Develop a model to describe the cycling of water through Earth's systems driven by energy from the sun and the force of gravity.

MS-ESS2-5 Collect data to provide evidence for how the motions and complex interactions of air masses result in changes in weather conditions.

MS-ESS2-6 Develop and use a model to describe how unequal heating and rotation of the Earth cause patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation that determine regional climates.

5E Model Phase: Elaborate

Learning Target:

Resource Availability (Science In The News)

>> Students will read scientific texts to determine central ideas about a scientific investigation.

>> Students will read scientific texts to obtain information in order to provide evidence for the concept that resource availability impacts the growth of organisms and populations.

Success Criteria:

Resource Availability (Science In The News)

>> I can describe the purpose of a scientific investigation.

>> I can describe the methods and conclusions of a scientific investigation.

>> I can use evidence from a scientific investigation to support the claim that the availability of resources impacts the growth of organisms and populations.

Science and Engineering Practices:

Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information

Crosscutting Concepts:

Cause and Effect

Prior Knowledge:

This activity is a part of the complete middle school unit, Organisms and Their Environments.  It is designed to follow the explore activities Intro To Ecosystems: Exploring Desert Life and Resource Availability: Water In The Desert. These activities are not included in this resource.

Students have already been introduced to the concepts of ecosystems, the organization of ecosystems, and briefly, interactions in ecosystems. They have developed an understanding that the availability of resources impacts the growth of individual organisms and populations.

If you are interested in the complete Organisms and Their Environments unit, you can find the relevant activities at iExploreScience on TeachersPayTeachers or in the sample resource library at the Science Teacher Tribe. When complete, you can view the complete unit storyline at iExploreScience.com/units.

NGSSMS-LS2-1
Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for the effects of resource availability on organisms and populations of organisms in an ecosystem. Emphasis is on cause and effect relationships between resources and growth of individual organisms and the numbers of organisms in ecosystems during periods of abundant and scarce resources.
