We all try to create socially responsible and aware students. This activity, though nominally based around mural creation, is really an experiential learning activity about resource inequality and discrimination. It is one of the most effective ways of helping students understand the concept, impact, and effects of resource inequality and discrimination in our communities and in our world I have ever used. Former students who have participated in this activity still remember and are impacted by it years later!
-Directions for an impactful activity on resource inequality and its effect on individuals and communities from the local to the international level
-Discussion questions for helping students get the most out of this activity
-A suggested writing prompt to encourage students to continue reflecting on their personal take-away from this activity
This activity is great in many different types of classrooms--from History to Citizenship/Social Responsibility and Economics to Religion. It is even great before teaching novels which address poverty or resource inequality.
Activity duration--approximately two to three standard class periods
