PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This resource consists of two units under Resources and Wealth of the Saskatchewan curriculum. Although it has been written to meet the outcome and indicators for the Saskatchewan Social Studies curriculum, it will meet the needs of educators teaching about the natural resources and industries of Canada.

Unit 9 relates to the indicators for RW5.1 - Explain the importance of sustainable management of the environment to Canada’s future.

Unit 10 relates to the indicators for RW5.2 – Hypothesize about economic changes that Canada may experience in the future.

Unit 9 offers an in-depth coverage of all the indicators for Outcome RW5.1 of the Saskatchewan curriculum –Explain the importance of sustainable management of the environment to Canada’s future.

Lessons are presented in the order of the indicators:

a. Differentiate between renewable resources (forests, fish, water) and non-renewable resources (oil, minerals)

b. Create an inventory of current non-sustainable practices (presence of plastics, packaging, dumping of waste into river systems)

c. List the possible consequences of non-sustainable practices related to the use of resources (lack of resources for future generations, endangered species, climate change)

d. Taking one resource as an example, illustrate how resource use and extraction process of the resource affects the environment (forests, oil sands, coal, uranium, potash)

e. Give examples of policies and actions that contribute to sustainability (water, conservation, informed decisions by consumers, reading material)

Unit 10 offers an in-depth coverage of all the indicators for Outcome RW5.2 of the Saskatchewan curriculum –Hypothesize about economic changes that Canada may experience in the future.

Lessons are presented in the order of the indicators:

a. Using factual data and statistics, predict the future demographic make-up of Canada (growth in senior citizen population, Aboriginal population, rates of immigration, birth rates, rural depopulation)

b. Describe the effect the movement of population has on local and provincial communities

c. Predict what industries will be of future significance in Canada using factual information , statistics and other data to support your prediction

d. Give examples of possible changes in Canada’s principal industries (large agriculture companies replacing family farms, the importance of technological industries)
