I was introduced to this kinesthetic way of teaching letter sounds this year. I have had success with this method of teaching. The students quickly connect the letter sound with the corresponding motion, and I am able to provide a visual/gestural cue to help them recall the sound when shown only the letter.
Please be aware: I DID NOT CREATE THE HAND MOTIONS FOR THE LETTERS, AND I DO NOT TAKE CREDIT FOR THEM.
I have created visual resources to support the teaching of the hand motions, including a list of letters and corresponding picture/ hand motions for each letter, alphabet and picture cards for classroom display/ classroom use (1 to a page, 2 to a page, 4 to a page), and a 2 page “Portable Word Wall” for students (I attached to a file folder and laminated for students who need to close copy words when writing).
