This product introduces and reviews the behavioral component of respect and the power of word choice.
This product works for grades 1-5.
The lesson begins by brainstorming what respect means, what does it look like, what does it sound like, and how can we show it throughout our day. Students are asked to think about how we can show respect in all areas of the school day- the bus, lunch room, special area, hallway, and the classroom.
Students are then introduced to the reading strategy:
making connections (text to text, text to self, and text to world).
After reviewing connections, teachers will introduce the mentor text "How I Feel" by Janan Cain. Students are asked to discuss different emotions from the story and reflect on times they have felt these emotions personally. A graphic organizer is included for students to record their thoughts and connections on.
Students are then asked to think about each emotion and what positive and negative behaviors can come with each emotion. A graphic organizer is included for students to record their thoughts and connections on.
Discuss with students the power of our words during the negative emotions. Students are then asked to share the things that may SAY while feeling each emotion.
Students are asked to think about the power of our words through two activities called "the paper activity" and "toothpaste words"- instructions and graphic organizer are included in this product.
The lesson wraps up with a writing prompt reflecting on respect and the power of our words.
