This lesson builds critical thinking skills by reading and responding to elements of poetry. In 24 pages, the child will
• preview rhyming and sound words,
• identify and read two poems (“Bow, Wow, Says the Dog” and “Bat, Bat”),
• respond to the rhymes of each poem,
• understand structure by locating rhyming words, and
• respond to rhythm by clapping and counting the beats.

This poetry discussion pack is the ninth lesson of Book 17
from the Newitt Beginning Reading and Writing Program. The program provides a fundamental yet integrated approach to reading, writing, listening, and speaking the English language.
