“Pick 4” is a set of activities designed for responding to literature. In this packet you will find nine different activities students can choose from when responding to, and demonstrating an understanding about what they are reading. This can be used with a whole class book study, individual reads, or used with your book club. It is best used with a chapter book.
Students are required to pick one activity from each row of choices, and then for their last choice they can pick from any row. When they are finished they will have chosen a total of “4”assignments. A response page is provided for each activity listed. When students have completed their choice of activities, they simply staple the pages together, putting the pick 4 page on top and turn them in. I have my students either cross out or shade in the boxes indicating the activities they chose to do.
“Pick 4” is generically designed so that it can be used with most all chapter books. I use this with most of my class book studies. My students enjoy the freedom of picking how they want to respond. Activities are strategically arranged so that when completed, students will have chosen a variety of depth of knowledge responses.
Among the activities to choose from in this packet, are:
Describing the plot of the story,
Describing Cause and Effect events from story,
Writing a book review,
Finding uncommon words from the context and writing their definitions,
Explaining some of the characteristics of the main character,
Designing and writing an appealing ad for the book,
Illustrating four important events from the story and writing a short description for each,
Drawing a sensory illustration of one of the characters,
Redesigning an eye catching book cover for the book
Each of the choices has easy to understand directions so that the students will know exactly how to complete each one. Corresponding, eye appealing, student response pages are provided for each assignment included in this packet.
