I created this resource because I wanted to prepare my fourth and fifth grade reading students for the fifth grade writing assessment. My students took a mock writing assessment at the beginning of the year and when the scores came back, I realized that many students struggled with responding to different types of writing prompts. My students are using these prompts as weekly homework for the month of August.
With this resource, students can practice responding to informational, persuasive, and narrative writing prompts with topics that are centered around unique holidays in August. Strategy posters for each type of writing are included to which students can refer. In addition, there are ten different weekly writing topics about different holidays and events in August. There are enough
prompts for you to give students a choice or you can use some of the prompts to model how to write an effective essay from a writing prompt. For each holiday or event, there is an informational,
persuasive, and narrative writing prompt. Students can pick a writing type or one can be assigned to them. These prompts are designed to be used weekly for homework or class work. Students can brainstorm, write a rough draft, revise and edit, and publish throughout the week.
Rubrics and checklists are also included within this resource for each type of writing. The rubrics are aligned with the six traits of writing. Students can practice editing and revising their essays using the editing marks that are included beside each student editing checklist.
Finally, there are rough draft pages and final draft pages that are meant to be double-sided copied. I assign a writing topic for homework and staple the prompt, graphic organizer, rough draft paper, editing checklist, final draft paper, and rubric into packets for students to keep throughout the week.
