Make response to literature essays manageable with THIS PLANNING page and ESSAY SAMPLE. The planner page defines the task and structures the response with essay, paragraph, and sentence parts. This set gets students reflecting on their text WHILE they move through the planning phase. Teachers can assign or students may choose a literary element to PROVE (essay sample is of character analysis).
Students will read ANY fictional story or non-fiction narrative and choose a literary element (setting/character/plot/theme) to write about from a menu of options. Next, they will create a thesis or main idea statement about their literary element, add sequence/transition words, and text evidence-all of which are framed out for them. Students will also analyze and "mark up" a provided essay sample which they can refer to if/when they get stuck-teachers can also use the sample essay as part of a lesson.
