One of the most challenging components of Common Core writing for students is providing evidence for their thinking. This is a great starting point for teaching response to literature to 4th grade students. In my experience, this is one of the most difficult writing genres for kids to master. I have used the picture book, The Rainbow Fish, and created a basic response to literature prompt. The story is familiar and easy for students to understand. It also provides plenty of possibilities for students to make personal connections to include in their response. Instead of expecting students to write the response on their own, this provides sentence frames for the entire essay so students learn the correct format for writing a thorough response to literature. I also created one for the story Giraffe's Can't Dance and One Grain of Rice so be sure to check those out too!
