With teachers busy schedules sometimes important happenings in their students' lives can be “missed”. Setting up a Hoot and Holler display on a wall or bulletin board, builds community within the classroom and keeps everyone updated on what’s going on, In turn a more caring classroom environment can be created and help students learn to communicate positively with one another.
Encourage your students to write down a Hoot or a Holler about things that are happening in their lives. Hollers are positive, happy things that they are proud of & what they have been doing. Hoots are notes a student shares because they are sad, upset, out of sorts or blue. These do not need to be positive. Maybe they have experienced a death of a pet or relative, they are moving and are scared, they had a bad dream, didn’t make a team, etc. By sharing these experiences with one another, students can lend support, encouragement, congratulations, anything with each other.
