Sometimes our students do not make wise choices and need to be separated from the group for a period of time. To help promote and encourage the learning of music symbols and names, instead of calling the place where you have your students stand/sit “time out”, call it your “Rest Area”. The name in itself implies that they need to calm down and reflect on their behavior and then the symbols on the poster will be reinforcing what you are teaching in the classroom. This has been an effective tool in my classroom and I hope it will be in yours as well.
You may also want to consider sharing this with the other teachers/principal in your school. What better way to get them on board to promoting Music (at least in one respect) as well as promoting a unified school approach to discipline? A strong unified approach is very effective . . .something to think about ☺.
