The Restaurant Writing Center combines reading and writing with the practical life skills of table settings, restaurant etiquette and career exploration; not to mention food vocabulary and association with various themes and cuisines!
I think we can agree that reading and writing become more meaningful in a fun, interactive, real world scenario. This isn't just a worksheet. Students are excited to read a menu; they are excited to write down what they would like to eat; they are excited to read what they wrote to their 'server', and their server is excited to listen and write down what they say.
Let your students take the time to set the table and think outside the box as they dream up additions to the script based on their real restaurant experiences. Don't worry if they want to expand on the lesson to include making up pretend families, being greeted by a host, complaining to the manager or finding a parking space! If they don't spend the whole center sitting quietly in a confined space carefully writing it only means they are expanding the lesson naturally and bringing in the blended learning. It's all good!!!
This bundle includes the Pizzeria, Mexican, Sports Grill, 50's Diner, Chinese and French Cafe Writing Centers.
Additional holiday-themed centers available in my store!
Included in each Restaurant Writing Center:
1. Step by Step Small Group Lesson Idea
2. Teacher Prep List and Tips

6. Menu with 3 options of drinks, appetizers, main courses and desserts-photos included.
7. Optional math worksheet: How much does my meal cost?
You can use props and have the students set the table during the center or just use what is included here as strictly a reading and writing activity.
Optional props would be a towel for the server's arm, cups, forks, spoons, knives and napkins for setting the table and paper plates for either coloring on or snack time!
Food and restaurant lessons are always a hit! Make the Restaurant Writing Center a regular activity in your classroom and your students will be setting the table and ordering meals like mini foodies before you know it!
I hope you enjoy this activity!
