Product Description
Oral and written retelling!

This product can be used with the whole class, a small group, or as an intervention for kids who have difficulty with the skill of retelling. This can be made into individual books. Using your read aloud or a big book, reread it each day for 5 days. Each day focuses on a different element or part of the story.
Day 1-Read the book. Draw and write about the characters
Day 2-Reread the book. Draw and write about the setting.
Day 3-Reread the book. Draw and write about the beginning.
Day 4-Reread the book. Draw and write about the middle.
Day 5-Reread the book. Draw and write about the end.
At the start of each new session, have the kids re-read the previous day’s work (characters, setting, etc.)
The individual books are scaffolded with the most supportive sentence structure to the blank paper with a visual of what to draw and write. The most supportive contains a sentence starter, the next has a sentence starter that has dotted letters that the kids can trace over, and the last just has lines for kids to write. Each book has a visual to remind them of what they are working on i.e. characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. The differentiation is in the amount of support. You will notice different frames so that you will know which book is for each group.
Your high group would work in the book without sentence starters.
Your middle group’s book would be the one with the dotted sentence starters that could be traced over and then they complete the rest of the sentence.
Your struggling readers would work in the book with the sentence started completed and the kids would then finish it. It would be beneficial for these students to orally tell what they want to write and you, as the teacher, should provide a line for each new word they have said.
The books are both portrait and landscape and two versions; with and without rectangles for drawing pictures.
An editable word bank is provided so that you can add words specific to your read aloud or book of choice.
Accompanying this product is my 5 Finger Retelling product that has posters and bookmarks with visuals for characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. It comes with 2 different skin tones as well as a version in black and white. Perfect for oral retelling.
This product can be used for your above grade level kids or your struggling kids, as an intervention or an extension.
5 Finger Retelling posters and bookmarks are also sold separately. Click Here to Check it Out
