I have used this Retelling Chain in my classroom for years to teach my young students how to properly retell a story. The visually pleasing and colorful images catch the eyes of the students and help them retain the information I am teaching.
Retelling Chain: Use the large, single page icons to make a vertical retelling chain to hang in the classroom. Use this retelling chain to teach students how to properly retell a story with all of the story elements. Practice it together with several books. After they understand the symbols and what they mean, students can use the chain as a visual reminder of a good retelling.
Retelling Bookmarks: The same icons are used for student bookmarks. They can keep these at their desks or in their books to reference. The bookmarks can also be taped down to the student desks.
Retelling Response Sheet: Practice using this retelling sheet together with a story that you have read and discussed with the students. Model how to fill it out correctly. Once the children are comfortable with the format and your expectations, this response sheet can be used for Independent Reading, Guided Reading and/ or the Listening Center.
