Students that are able to retell and summarize have a better understanding of what they have read and are able to remember what they have read for long periods of time.
This file contains an anchor chart and graphic organizer I use with my Tier 3 readers. It also includes an explanation of how I scaffold my instruction so that students become independent thinkers and are able to independently retell and summarize.
I have used this anchor chart and graphic organizer for 2 years and our school has increased our Reading SOL pass rate from 75% to 83% and we have been able to meet your AMO for our SPED students.
Students find that they become confident in their ability to read and understand text, think critically about the text, and yes, answer those dreaded test questions with accuracy.
All of my students, even the ones that dreaded reading, begin to find reading fun and they look forward to reading group every day!
