Product Description

Included in this packet is a five of reading response projects for students to complete. All projects revolve around the skill of retelling a story using the story elements. These projects can be used with ANY text. Most of the projects include several different versions to easily provide differentiation in the classroom.

Retelling Book

The first project is a book for students beginning to learn the skills. Students choose any fictional book to retell and create a book retelling the story. Each element of the retelling is a page that is completed and illustrated. Each page includes a “sentence starter” to support students just learning this skill or that are below grade level. Students also rate the text on the last page. Two versions of this book are included. One has primary writing lines and the other has solid lines.

Folded Retelling Book

The second project is a simple folded book. Three versions of the book are included. In the first version, students can only draw pictures to respond. In the second version, students can draw pictures and write to describe each story element. The events also include some prompts with transition words. The last book has students write to identify all story elements.

Retelling Flap Book

The third project is a flap book. To prepare the flap books copy the two pages back to back. Fold the books “hot dog style” on the dark black, solid line in the middle. Have students cut along the dotted lines to the solid black line. Students then can illustrate the outside flap and then write the story element on the inside flap. The rubric is the same as the rubric above to score the project.

Retelling Flip Book

The fourth project is a flip book. The flipbook has five pages, one page for each story element. The flipbook is made to be half a page to save as much ink and copies as possible. The flipbooks are also the perfect size to glue into an interactive notebook. Two versions of this book are included. One has primary writing lines and the other has solid lines.

Mini Retelling Book

The last project is a mini retelling book. This book can be a bit more complicated to create because it does require folding and a simple cut. Visual directions are linked to a YouTube tutorial. Three versions of the book are included. In the first version, students can only draw pictures to respond. In the second version, students can draw pictures and write to describe each story element. The events also include some prompts with transition words. The last book has students write to identify all story elements.

Scoring Rubrics

At the end of each project is a simple rubric. One side is for students to complete to make sure they created a quality project. The second side is for the teacher to complete for the final assessment and score. For projects with multiple levels of difficulty, the rubrics are numbered to match the project. For the lowest level there is a black circle with a 1, the 2 represents a mid-leveled project, and a 3 indicates the most difficult project.
