Use it as a center, home reading activity, or an in class activity. Once kids understand the system of how events interconnect they can use this organizer not only to retell and summarize, but as an outline for written summaries. The colors are specifically designed to work with color coding used in Step Up to Writing. Character boxes are green because usually they are introduced at the beginning of a story. Likewise topic sentences and introductions (in Step Up to Writing) are colored green. As important events unfold, we introduce the yellows. When students write it’s a reminder for them to slow down and write about specific events.
For repeated in class use, I print this in color and then laminate it. It allows kids to write on it with a Vis-a-Vi marker. As homework or non-center activities it can be printed in black and white.
