2) A document-based activity that will help your students understand what life was like in post-war America. After fighting in the bloodiest war in human history, veterans were returning home to a completely different America. Students will look and the new economy that veterans returned to and programs that President Harry Truman put into place to help stabilize the economy, including the GI Bill and "Fair Deal" programs. Students will read and answer questions about a pamphlet that the returning veterans received called "Dear Mr. Veteran." This pamphlet told veterans all about the new America and what they needed to do to live in it.

This activity can be used in many different ways in the classroom. Students can work independently, in pairs or this activity can be used as a jigsaw in order to facilitate a class wide discussion about the topics discussed in the activity.
