This activity was designed to review the concepts of median, mean, mode, and range, as well as making simple line plots. It includes a worksheet with sample answers to guide students through a simple survey and line plot activity to review the concepts. A second worksheet guides students though an activity called "How Many Marshmallows Can I Pick Up", which requires the use of chopsticks. Directions are included for using the worksheets together as a complete math lesson.
I created this activity because I needed an interesting and fun way to review these concepts with my 5th Grade math students prior to teaching the use of line plots and finding averages with fractions. This would also make a great lesson to teach when being observed because it combines teaching of common core math concepts with the cultural diversity aspect of using chopsticks, a hands-on activity, and cooperative learning. It could also be modified to be used as a math learning center.
