Product Description
This assignment requires students to choose a picture book and analyze it carefully for various elements (i.e. story elements such as plot and setting, visual elements such as cover art/illustrations). They are then asked to practice and perform a read aloud for the rest of the class, including leading a discussion. I have used this as an intro to a unit where students write their own social justice picture book...so I picked books along those themes. But it could be used with any picture book. Also includes peer-evaluation option.

Partial list of social justice books we used:
Gleam and Glow by Eve Bunting
Emmanuel’s Dream by Laurie Ann Thompson
The Soccer Fence by Phil Bildner
The Princess Knight by Cornelia Funke
Anthony Best by Davene Fahy
Hope Springs by Eric Walters
10,000 Dresses by Marcus Ewert
And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell
Terrible Things by Eve Bunting
Ghost Train by Paul Yee
The Lotus Seed by Sherry Garland
When I Get Older: The Story Behind Wavin’ Flag by K’Naan and Rudy Gutierrez
Not My Fault by Leif Kristiansson
Wings by Christopher Myers
