Winter break is over, and like any teacher heading back into the classroom, you'll be reteaching and reviewing all the routines and procedures that keep your classroom and students on track. Instead of dreading the review, embrace it!

When it comes time to review my students’ routines and procedures after a break, I always get the best results when:

  1. Students have ownership of the review session
  2. The work is collaborative
  3. The focus is positive, and on the desired behaviors and expectations (ex: “I can walk in the hallway,” instead of the negative, “Don’t run in the halls.”)
  4. We display artifacts of our work for future reference

By focusing on the positive and desired outcomes, the review sessions are lighthearted, engaging, and meaningful to students. Nobody wants to come back to school to be lectured about rules that haven’t even been broken yet. Using a collaborative, positive framework with students as the experts, your young scholars can demonstrate understanding of the rules and practice them willingly.
