UPDATED FOR Spring Testing ***** Please note TEA has put field passages back in to STAAR assessments
I cannot tell you how excited I am to get this little treasure out there to all you ELA testing teachers! When I began teaching fourth grade I struggled with revise vs. edit, narrative vs. expository and more. Now, I have done so much research, looking at exams, teaching material, studying the TEKS and working with an outside firm I want to help you and your students!
Take the stress and nervousness out of the revise and edit questions for both you and your students!
I examined the released STAAR tests and statistical data and built this review from that information.
I walk you through a quick easy version of revise versus edit. I also based the number of both types of questions based on what has been on previous exams. I've included the few hints that I think are easiest but most important that will not only net your students the most points but will put you both at ease.
This review is based on TEKS 4.15C and 4.15D, these are your main revise and edit STAAR TEKS.
It doesn't matter if you test in less than a week, you and your students will use this information!
I would teach a mini lesson on revise and edit. Then, I would have students sort through the task card or scoot questions and see if they can determine which ones are revise and which are edit (I have included a key for you). How you have students answer is up to you. I like to have students work with two different partners and we take a couple of days to go through the entire set of cards. As I happen upon interesting conversations I stop the class for a whole group discussion and we add to our anchor chart.
