This color coded revising and Editing system encourages the students to reread their papers more than once, and stay focused on the task they are performing. It also makes it quite easy to see what revisions and corrections were made. This is how I use these with my third grade students.
I have a set of tubs, each filled with different color highlighters and pens. I attach the label with the same color frame as the highlighters/pens to each tub. For example: In the tub with the “Voice” label (which has a red frame) there are red pens and pink highlighters. In the “Spelling” tub there are green pens and highlighters.
When it comes time to revise, I put out the tub I want students to use. If we are revising for voice, I pull out the red “Voice” tub and have students make revisions for voice using a pink highlighter or red pen. Later, when editing for spelling, the green “Spelling" tub is out.
One or two tubs are pulled out each day until all the types of revisions and editing I want done are finished. However the students can always grab a color at the writing supply center and revise or edit their papers.
There are 2 sizes of labels made for different size tubs.
