Needing an introduction to revision? Examining the writing process of familiar authors is a great place to start. Before publishing the Little House on the Prairie books, Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote Pioneer Girl, an adult memoir about her life. Although five drafts exist, Pioneer Girl was not published until 2014. This annotated autobiography gives us a glimpse at the revision process that led to the Little House books.
This product includes the following:
1. “Revising with Laura Ingalls Wilder”: A twenty-eight slide Prezi that begins with a brief overview of Ingalls Wilder’s life. Then it goes over the major revisions made in the process of drafting Pioneer Girl and the Little House books (changes in audience and perspective). It then gives five minor revisions Ingalls Wilder made. This presentation ends with a discussion question about why writers may be hesitant to revise.
2. Teaching Tips Page: Five suggestions are given for presenting “Revising with Laura Ingalls Wilder” These include points to make at various places in the lesson.
3. Helpful Links Page: The publication of Pioneer Girl is really an interesting event. This page gives links to three sites or articles that give further information about the differences between it and the Little House books, Laura Ingalls Wilder as a writer, and the relationship between Ingalls Wilder and her daughter—an alleged ghostwriter of her mother’s books.
This lesson helps students see revision as a real-world process before digging into the nuts and bolts of it. It also serves as a book talk for Pioneer Girl: An Annotated Autobiography.
