I use this set of lesson plans with my 7th grade writers in first semester. Revision takes many different perspectives on the process to reach all students, so this is just one of many different approaches. For this one, I use "Finding Nemo" and the "Lion King" as examples.
Day 1: On page 1, I introduce revision as an integral part of the process and discuss its contrast to editing. We then try to revise my brief writing on "Find Nemo."
Day 2: The students practice in a pair being a Peer Reviser. I have given them a brief piece of writing on "Lion King," and they first write their revision suggestions, and then verbally try out a peer conference. As a class, we usually get back together and discuss what it felt like to revise with a peer.
Day 3: The students choose their partners (they are less anxious when they are with a friend), and they follow the guidelines on the worksheet to read and discuss the peer's work. I often use a timer to buzz their conversations - five minutes to read and write feedback, five minutes to discuss.
This resource includes all three days' activities in a packet.
