About this exercise:

This is a Power Point I have used in my own English classes for many years in the week before the due date of the final draft of any essay. Although it can be given to students to review at home, I use it IN class. I ask students to bring a copy of their essay and load this up on the screen. I walk them through each slide, pausing to let them look for the issues covered here. I do not provide enough time in class for students to revise their entire paper as we do the Power Point. Instead, I use this as a springboard into deeper revision they will do at home, only now they will have begun the work with my guidance.

This exercise accomplishes three goals:

  • Students see how many steps there are to proofreading and revision.
  • Students can more easily determine how to plan for potentially time-consuming revisions.
  • Students have guidance in identifying areas of need, begin to revise, and then have a plan for how to tackle the remaining areas on their own outside of class.
