I use this test with my American Literature class. It starts with two medium length passages they are unfamiliar with. This assesses their ability to comprehend texts from early American times. Other passages should be found in most textbooks. The test includes questions from passages such as Patrick Henry's Speech to the Virginia Convention, Thomas Paine's The Crisis, Crevecoeur's Letters from a Farmer: What is an American?, and The Declaration of Independence. It concludes with a more modern passage by Quidlen that connects to the core themes of the above literature. Students are then asked to write a constructed response. All questions test RI Common Core Standards. They are not easy questions, but rather, higher thinking questions assessing comprehension skills.
