This is the first in a series of argument-based writing activities that supports United States' History curriculum. This prompt requires students to analyze a quotation, make and argument, and support their argument with textual evidence. This activity is designed to support Common Core Standards which require students to "cite textual evidence, evaluate authors' premises and points of view, and integrate information from diverse sources" (www.corestandards.org). The Common Core is pushing students beyond simple narrative writing in social studies, and specifically focuses on argument-based writing. This prompt is just the ticket! This product includes a pre-write activity, a formal writing prompt assignment, and a rubric for assessing the students' work. This prompt works well with the additional Quote Analysis activity, available on this site, which instructs students in how to write a quotation analysis response. This prompt can also be purchased at a discount in the First Semester Writing Prompt Bundle.
