Students read an account about George Washington crossing the Delaware during the Revolutionary War, then answer 10 questions about it. They then pick another battle from the war and write a similar newspaper report article on it (balancing historical accuracy and creativity). The handout includes clear and thorough instructions as to what the students must include in their own article. The answers are included where appropriate and this is great for a sub! This is easily modified into a pairs or group activity or a mix (I have my students individually read and answer the questions then pair up to write the article).
Sample questions include:
-Why was Dec 1776 a desperate time for the patriots?
-How were these battles a turning point in the Revolution?
--Why might Elisha take the time to note the appearance of the Hessians?
-When Elisha's service was requested to be extended by George Washington, what was his thought process about whether to stay or go home?
