Using George Washington's actual code (which can be found in the back of the book George Washington, Spymaster by Thomas B. Allen) students will decipher the message and then create a response in code. (The coded question asks students to explain why they believe they should get an A on this assignment). The purpose of the assignment is to get students thinking critically (does their translation make sense? etc.) and to give them a small idea of the work that must have gone into the intelligence game during the Revolutionary War.
