Give students an opportunity to make themselves a part of history through this writing activity.
How to use this resource
I use this resource as a writing activity and formative assessment about what my students have learned. As I teach about an event leading up to the Revolutionary War, students will write a journal entry.
The journal entry also is helpful during weekly town meetings. This is where the students share their opinions about what is happening and it usually turns into a heated discussion between patriots and loyalists.
During the introduction the students should choose a side of patriot or loyalist as well as their role in society, i.e. their jobs, family life, name, and age. Students should write in a way that reflects the time period. In order to prepare and introduce them to the language we show several videos that portray this time in America. Students then create lists of words and terms that they can integrate into their writing.
