Incorporate authentic learning into your classroom by having your students complete this project as you teach about perspectives of colonists in the Revolutionary War. The project is organized around the question: How can you as a patriot or loyalist create a media message to convince others in the colonies during the Revolutionary War to agree with your beliefs?
Students will analyze the perspectives of loyalists, patriots, and those who remained neutral. After analyzing examples of media messages from the patriots, such as Patrick Henry's speech, and the Join or Die political cartoon, students will pick a side and create their own media messages geared towards a colonial audience. They will not only practice social studies content, but also reading and writing nonfiction skills, and persuasive language. Throughout the learning process, their projects will help drive your instruction. There are also opportunities throughout for teaching social skills and 21st century skills through different types of sharing, giving and receiving feedback, and being flexible with plans.
This project can easily be differentiated for your classroom needs. It can be assigned as an enrichment project for early finishers/advanced learners or as a whole class project.
The project includes:
- Step by step teaching notes and teaching suggestions
- Central Question
- Analysis of Revolutionary Perspectives PMI Chart
- Analyzing Revolutionary Media Messages Graphic Organizer
- Message Plan Graphic Organizer
