An introductory unit for elementary age that explores the general themes, causes, and effects of the American Revolutionary War. Students will identify the major "steps to revolution" leading up to the war. Students will evaluate the arguments for and against colonial independence. Students will evaluate the contents of the Bill of Rights and infer what historical events led to the protection of those rights. Students will identify key people involved with the American Revolution, and describe how they were involved. Students will describe the difference between Patriots and Loyalists, and give arguments for each perspective.Students will write a letter using specific vocabulary content, describing the war experience from the perspective of a soldier. Students will describe the events of the Boston Tea Party, in writing in newspaper format. Students will evaluate the crimes of King George III, and decide whether those crimes called for separation.Students will summarize, in writing the impact of the Revolutionary War on contemporary society, by writing a thank you letter to the Founding Fathers.
