'No Peanutbutterization Without Representation'
This is a fun and unique way that I use to help my students understand the phrase ‘No Taxation without Representation’. In this activity, students are told that the cafeteria has created a new menu and set of rules. The new menu includes basically just peanut butter EVERYDAY for breakfast and lunch. The new rules state that kids may not bring their lunches from home and face being expelled if they refuse to purchase school lunch.
The goal is for students to understand how angry American colonists were over absurd laws and taxes that were imposed. Students will also understand how colonists felt about not having a voice in Parliament to help in making the laws and taxes.
This activity includes:
*step by step teacher's guide
*a fake breakfast/lunch menu
*a worksheet for students to share their thoughts and opinions about the new menu
*instructions for a poster project
*a letter writing prompt (you choose the length based on your students abilities)
This activity connects the phrase to a silly-real world scenario that makes it easier for students to comprehend.
