In this activity, students analyze the lyrics to two songs:
1. We're Not Gonna Take It
2. It's Too Late to Apologize: A Declaration
Both songs are perfect to express the attitudes American Colonists had towards England and their king in the mid to late 1700s.
After completing the analysis, students watch the videos (The 'We're Not Gonna Take It' video is just lyrics. 'It's Too Late to Apologize' is an actual video).
As a follow-up, student create a 4 stanza poem that reflects American Colonists attitude towards England and the king in the years leading up to the Revolutionary War.
This assignment is designed to help students understand the frustration the American colonists had with England and the king. Understanding this frustration will help them to see why they declared their independence and became an independent nation. This assignment should be used after students have learned about important events leading up to the Revolutionary War,such as the Stamp Act and Sugar Act. Students should also have an understanding of, ‘Taxation without Representation’ in which the colonist felt they had no voice in the British Parliament.
