This Rewriting Algebraic Expressions activity is designed to give students experience representing expressions in different ways. This skill is essential to algebra and pre-algebra.
Students are given 8 expressions and asked to create new expressions of the same value using properties of equality and simplification. Then, they create stories for each expression.
You will receive a PDF of the 2-page handout. Possible responses will vary, but a PDF of some possible answers is included.
A suggested outline is included. I recommend using this with groups!

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.7.EE.A.1 Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
CCSS.Math.Content.7.EE.A.2 Understand that rewriting an expression in different forms in a problem context can shed light on the problem and how the quantities in it are related.
CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.C.7.b Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms.
CCSS.Math.Content.HSA.SSE.A.2 Use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it.
