Product Description

For this simple activity, students will need a pencil and this assignment, and you will need access to the internet and a projector (or some device that the students can all watch the video on).

Students will consider the following while watching a live performance of George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue":

-what instruments do you see?

-mood

-tempo

-genre (this is a good opportunity to discuss classical and jazz characteristics)

This activity worked well with my Grade 7 and 8 Band students, it would also work well with beginning Grade 9 band students. Students could work on the assignment independently or you could respond to the questions in the form of a class discussion.

This is a 30-40 minute activity. There is no answer key included.
