This is a 24 question assessment. It can be used for formative or summative purposes. After a unit on rhetorical devices and ethos, pathos, logos, I utilize this assessment to check whether or not students can read/listen to a speech on their own and analyze its rhetoric.
Using a relatively unknown but very powerful speech, this assessment contains questions that will test understanding of: tone, shift in tone, ethos/pathos/logos (ethical, emotional, logical appeal), vocabulary in context, main idea, intended audience, figurative language, rhetorical devices (alliteration, counterargument, loaded words, parallelism, repetition, rhetorical question), and effective structure. Keeping in line with common core, many of the questions within the assessment require justification of a previous response citing examples from the text.
