This is a hands-down, NEVER-FAIL activity to help students understand the difference between purpose and message in the rhetorical situation. I absolutely love the final step when students realize their preconceived notions were completely wrong.
Students minds are ALWAYS blown!
The premise of this activity is to guide students through a reading, listening and viewing of a Canadian commercial (but you don’t tell them it’s a commercial). The objective is to illustrate how each part of the rhetorical situation must be examined in order to truly understand the message and the purpose of a text.
While going through the activity, student perceptions of the situation and message change with each subsequent examination of the text.
