This activity was used with my 12th grade AP Language students to practice rhetorical analysis. Included is a news article and a thorough analysis of its strategies, why they were used, how they impacted the audience, and how these strategies achieved the overall purpose.
To prepare, I divided the class into small groups and made copies of the chart included in the packet- 1 for each group.
Then, I cut the chart up so each individual box was isolated--these boxes were placed in an envelope and given to each group. After reading the article, groups were to match each strategy to the reason it was used (WHY?), the impact it likely had on the audience (HOW?), and how the strategy achieved the overall purpose (SO WHAT?). These are the guiding questions I use to teach them how to reach the highest level of analysis.
