GUIDED LESSON FT. SOAPSTONE + ROGERIAN ARGUMENT

Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham Jail" is a wonderful example to teach the Rogerian Argument model to your students.  In this lesson, you will find a Rhetorical Situations PowerPoint Lesson with an accompanying Rhetorical Situations Worksheet that will guide your students through a presentation on Rhetorical Situations, including Aristotle's Rhetorical Triangle (Ethos / Logos / Pathos) as well as an explanation of the SOAPStone acronym.  In addition to this, students will be introduced to the structure of the Rogerian Argument.  I've included the tools to apply an analysis of this structure in MLK's essay with the Rogerian Argument Worksheet so that your students recognize this structure in literature.  Students can then demonstrate their understanding of these concepts with the Rhetorical Analysis Assignment, which includes a ready-to-print Assessment Rubric!

If any of the terms mentioned in this assignment are unfamiliar to your students, I recommend using the following resource: SET OF THREE | Collaborative WORD WALLS | FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE and Literary Terms. This resource is designed for an AP Language and Composition course, but can easily be adapted (and still highly beneficial!) for students without the background knowledge of AP through the use of my Collaborative Word Wall activity.

I’ve also included a set of Bell Ringers to accompany MLK's 40-paragraph essay. In the case that you wish to assign the essay in halves, the Bell Ringers have been divided into two (Paragraphs 1-21 and 22-40). I’ve included an editable template for the Bell Ringers in case you wish to combine them, or eliminate certain questions.

Finally, I’ve included an annotated copy of my close reading of the text for your own perusal. For consistency’s sake, I recommend using this copy of the essay.
